AS: How Long Will They Mourn...

For 5 years of my adolescent life I lived @ 28th and Kentucky Street in the West End of Louisville. I attended the Parkland Boys and Girls Club every day accept holidays for so much of my life that it was literally my second home. Crossing the railroad tracks over to the 3200 block of Greenwood, I would encounter 2 dudes who would terrorize me every day. It's always funny and ironic in movies when the little fat kid gets bullied, but this was literally my real life. Chased and teased everyday by Chris Buckner and Michael Bland. This is a tribute to the memory of Mike and every other victim of my neighborhood.

I was no different than anyone on my block, as a matter of fact, I was likely a little less fortunate. When the Bo Jacksons came out and everyone was rocking them, I was still wearing LA Gears and Fila. When Cross Colors was the thing to wear, I was in 4th Street attire (KNOCKOFFS). But yet and still every day after school I would congregate with the guys from the neighborhood in front of Whiteys. Whiteys is the store smack dab in the middle of kentucky and Greenwood on 32nd Street. Penny Candy, Quarter Juices, Sunflower Seeds, Grippos, Tahitian Treats, etc... this was a staple of my child hood. We would crack, rap, race up and down the block, break into abandoned school buildings, steal baseball cards, just basic adolescent foolishness. Everyday when the club got out and I walked home, Chris and Mike would tease me, and chase me across the tracks. We never fought, and they didnt catch me often, but they were a huge obstacle in my childhood. I HATED these guys as a kid.

When I got to high school, my parents moved out to Shively, and my interaction with 32nd street was minimized. This was around 1996, and this is when i can assume that gang activity was introduced to the neighborhood, i was'nt there, and I was beginning to focus on whether or not I was gonna go to college. They all went to Waggner, I went to Ballard. My friend circle was then introduced to people from everywhere but the West End, and i was no longer a part of the culture of my old neighborhood. Years passed and people began dying... shootings and violent activity plagued the men from this area, and many of the dudes who taught me how to be tough, crack jokes, and be cool were all slowly becoming extinct.

Well 12 years Later, I'm a college graduate and haven't seen many of these guys since 1996 and the death of one puts it all into perspective. I am blessed. If I never knew how God had his hands on me, I know NOW. I could have went in the same direction as my comrades, but God. I Mourn the Death of Michael Bland age 27 from 32nd street. I wept this morning for all of the men who are trapped in the cycle of violence and feel as they have no way out. I am not optimisic about the possibility of resolve and a stopping of the violence, because now people want revenge. Mothers will continue to cry, and my brothers will continue to die. When you get a chance say a prayer for my brothers and all who continue to fall victim to the streets.

JE: I'm in a Movie!

...well at least my voice is. Here's the deal. The movie The Perfect Holiday came out in theatres around this time last year. It's now available on DVD. The movie stars Morris Chestnut, Gabrielle Union, Charlie Murphy, Katt Williams, Faizon Love, Terrance Howard, and Queen Latifah. Morris Chestnut's character, Benjamin is a struggling songwriter looking for his big break. The two times in the movie where he is shown singing, the voice you hear is that of yours truly. That being said, make sure you guys check it out sometime during this holiday season.

Also, don't forget to stop by the website and pick up your copy or copies of A Rustic Soul Christmas. And don't forget the discount prices for bulk orders!!! Well, I guess that's it for now. Have a great Thanksgiving, but don't eat too much turkey!!!

MH: The Stranger in the Elevator...

I meant to tell this story a few months ago, but forgot about it.

Man, Christians can be funny acting. But then again, non-Christians can be funny acting. I guess it's safe to just say that people can be funny acting. This isn't one of those stories.

So I had to play at a birthday party at a hotel on a higher floor that had a deck outside. It was sweet--actually, it was the Indigo in Nashville. Well, I leave my keyboard at my church and I was down to actually playing my brother's casio at this gig (reference the "Mike Encounters a Brave New Whore" blog). So, we're on the elevator and it stops on a certain floor a guy is looking at me like, "what in the world are you about to do with that Casio?" He asked me if I played and what was going on. I told him where I was headed. Well, this brotha, without even knowing who I am or anything else about me says, "dude, I got a Motif in the room if you want to use it." This brotha couldn't even get into the party as it was an invite-only type thing, but he was willing to let me--a total stranger--use his board. I know musicians in town who won't let me borrow their gear and I've known them for years. I could have walked out and just left with his stuff and he wouldn't have even known my name or anything to find me. I went to his room and as I was getting off of the elevator, I noticed a familiar face--Pastor Tim Rogers (great preacher and singer). I watch this dude on youtube all of the time. Caring only that I was able to present the best I could at the gig, they let me borrow the equipment and I took it back to them when I was through.

I was thinking that if this was some ol' "I saw this Pastor with a bunch of women", the word would have spread like wildfire; but this is an instance where a servant of God acted in a manner that was very Christ-like and that word should be spread. As Alex Haley would say, "Find the good and praise it."

Thanks Pastor Tim Rogers and thanks Brian!

DH: New benefit show for you to be apart of...

The benefit concert will not only raise money for the Thomas family, but will also be used to educate people on the present danger of contracting HIV/AIDS and the fact that this disease is still an issue. Too many people rely on the "common knowledge" that HIV/AIDS is limited to those of a certain social class or sexual preference but this is not the case. This is a Human disease. Stephen and Cristy have been together for sixteen years with no signs of the disease present until the last few years. As a happily married heterosexual couple, their unique situation brings even more awareness that HIV/AIDS crosses all boundaries.

Come to the benefit, help out the cause and educate yourself on this horrible disease. There will be instructive information distributed about the family, their situation and the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. If unable to attend the benefit concert, you may also make a donation online ... every dollar helps.
